The Great Bay in the Hotel Commonwealth, former home of the amazing Sand Dollar Menu, will be closing its doors for good this Saturday the 30th due to a combination of the economy and bad luck.

I had a chat with my friend Tonie Snyder from the Radius group, who worked on PR for The Great Bay. “It was a long time coming,” she said. “When the restaurant opened, they got 3 stars and were doing so well, then within a year the hotel started construction and it was under scaffolding for over a year. Add to that the bus station construction…its momentum was cut short and it just never recovered.”

Of course the economy didn’t help, as well as the fact that The Great Bay is a very expensive restaurant to run.

Bringing fine dining to Kenmore Square was a bold move.  Consider the fact that The Great Bay took over where the old IHOP used to be. Fortunately, Eastern Standard still seems to be going strong, and now that the horrific bus terminal construction seems to be nearing completion, future establishments won’t have as bad luck as The Great Bay, which held on for seven years.

Aujourd’hui in the Four Seasons will also be closing in June as well, citing the economy to blame. They will be changing their name and turning into a venue for private functions.
